Israeli Conflict with Hamas, Ceasefire
Dear Reader
Today is the fourth Saturday of the month and so I will be writing about a country outside of South Asia.
The country I will discuss about today is Israel.
Israel has been in a conflict with Palestine for the last two weeks.
It began on May 6th when Palestinians rioted in East Jerusalem against an anticipated decision of the Supreme Court of Israel. The Court was hearing a case on a property dispute in Sheikh Jarrah. It was over settlements in Sheikh Jarrah which were occupied by Palestinians but claimed by Israelis. During the course of the case the Jews proved that ehy were the owners of the settlements as they had the legal documents passed down to them from their predecessors. The Muslims had forcefully taken over the settlements in the past.
The Court on an earlier date had offered to the Palestinians to continue living in the settlements as tenants. The Palestinians had refused to abide by the offer.
And hence the Court was to hear the case again on May 9th.
It was anticipated that it would order an eviction of the Palestinians and a return of the settlements to the Jews.
Hence some Palestinians rioted on the 6th. 200 Palestinians and 17 Israeli police officers were injured but there were no deaths. The riots continued till Saturday when hundreds of Palestinians rioted on the Gaza border burning tires, throwing explosives at Israeli troops who then tear-gassed them.
On that same night, rockets were launched from Gaza into Israel. These rockets did not only target military locations but also civilian residences in Israel. However 90% of these rockets were taken down by Israel's Iron Dome.
Israel responded by attacking Hamas' facilities and locations. They did not target civilians. However Hamas fired from locations with civilian populations. And hence Israel's attacks killed some civilians. However these deaths were unavoidable and Hamas is responsible for them. I
I support Israel's retaliation against Palestine. The Palestinians had no right to riot against Israelis and to fire rockets at them.Israel had every right to retaliate against them.
Taking together the riots and the rocket attacks the Israelis lost 14 citizens, the Palestinians 370 - 61% of whom were militants.
This shows that Israel's campaign against Hamas was successfull. It will take a long time for Hamas to recover from Israel's attacks which will give some time for peace to exist in the region.
The conflict ended on 21st May 2021 with a ceasefire.
I do not agree with this. I think Israel should have continued the war until Hamas was finally finished. I fear that this will simply allow Hamas to regroup and attack again at a later time.
I hope I am wrong.
This was my analysis of the Israel-Palestinian conflict from 6th May to 21st May.
Please comment what you thought of it.
Thank you for reading.
