Indian Government Notice to Twitter

Dear Reader,

Today is the first Saturday of the month and hence this post will be about the latest news relating to nationalism in India.

Today I want to discuss a notice that the Indian government sent to Twitter Inc.

In the notice it told Twitter to comply with a series of Information Technology Rules decreed in February. In those Rules the government has asked social media companies to comply with the provisions in them. In order to understand the impact of these rules one must read Section 79, subsection 1 of the Information Technology Act of 2000, which reads as follows:

 (1) Notwithstanding anything contained in any law for the time being in force but subject to the provisions of sub-sections (2) and (3), an intermediary shall not be liable for any third party information, data, or communication link made available or hosted by him. An intermediary is defined under Sec2(1)(ua)(w) as "intermediary", with respect to any particular electronic records, means any person who on behalf of another person receives, stores or transmits that record or provides any service with respect to that record and includes telecom service providers, network service providers, internet service providers, web-hosting service providers, search engines, online payment sites, online-auction sites, online-market places and cyber cafes;"

Ravi Shankar Prasad - India's Information and Technology Minister

The new rules say that if an intermediary does not comply with them then they will no longer have protection under Sec 79(1) of the IT Act. This means that if any information, data or communication link made available by it is unlawful in any way then, the intermediary will be held liable for it.

This is said in Sec.7 of the Rules "Where an intermediary fails to observe these rules, the provisions of sub-section (1) of section 79 of the Actshall not be applicable to such intermediary and the intermediary shall be liable for punishment under any law for the time being in force including the provisions of the Act and the Indian Penal Code.".

Once these rules were published by the government it gave social media companies 3 months to comply with them. All of them did fully comply with them except for Twitter. This is why the government has given a final notice to Twitter warning it to comply or have the IT Rules enforced against it.

I agree with this notice from the government. Twitter is operating in India for more than a decade now. While it undoubtedly has provided a quality service to its users, hence its growth in the country. However it has done several acts that are against India's national interest. This includes, but is not limited to, censorship of users done out of political or religious bias, arbitrary enforcement of rules, banning accounts and deleting Tweets without a proper reason. Not only Twitter but other social media websites like Facebook and Instagram have done the same.

They are politically biased towards the opposition parties in India and towards anti-national elements in the country that are trying to destabilise the nation. These include Jihadists, Maoists, Urban Naxals, etc. Twitter and other social media sites are trying to destabalise India under Modi to make sure his government loses the next election in 2024. This is so that the opposition will come to power and let them have free reign in the country. This must not be allowed to happen. Even if you are opposed to the ruling party and will vote for another one you should not support parties that seek to destabilise the country, and you definitely should not support for-profit corporations who are trying to do the same. I hope that Twitter complies with this notice.

If it does not then I hope - and desire - that the government will take legal action against them. And if even after doing so they still continue to flout the law then I would want the Indian Government to ban Twitter Incorporated from India. Thank you for Reading.
